PERSONAL PHOTO ALBUM II

HOME

Our other photos pages have gotten so large that I thought I would start a third one.  All of these photos were made starting in January 2001.

On May 22, I took these photos of a bird that I shall call a hawk, though  I recognize that this particular bird of prey may go by some other name.   The photos are not great as the digital camera does not have a telephoto or real zoom feature.  But, if you know that actual name of this bird, please do let me know.

When I first noticed this bird, he was sitting on our address post which is only about  five feet off of the ground.  He was diligently watching for one of our chipmunks or squirrels to make a fatal mistake.

He made an attempt to capture something, but was unsuccessful.   Here, he is rising up after his attempt.

He then flew up to a power pole and took up a new position.  I assume because of my presence on the deck taking photos.

After just a few minutes on the telephone pole he decided to take off and went over into the woods on the other side of the house.
It is difficult to even tell what you are seeing in this shot, but his wings are bent first up and then down at an angle when he leaves his perch.

I got one last shot of him as he swooped past my location headed for the woods on the other side of the house.  I did not interfere further with his pursuit of breakfast.

On May 3, 2001 a snow started that ended up giving us an accumulation of over two feet of snow in two large waves.  It was still snowing when these photos were taken.

On May 5, 2001 we decided that we needed to dig out to make a trip to the grocery store.  Doc started shoveling to get the car out.  The road is behind Doc in the photo and it was plowed the afternoon before.  There are another eight inches of snow that had fallen overnight on the road at the time this photo was taken.

March 11, 2001 A view of our snow covered world.  March is one of our snowiest months.

This is how the same scene looks during a snow storm.

The two photos below were taken in late February 2001.  It is always interesting to see the animals tracks in the snow.  None of the tracks below are human.  Mostly these belong to coyotes and rabbits.

Perhaps we need to call this the "deerfeeder" instead of the birdfeeder.

This coyote might be confused with a pet dog at first glance.  If you think that you might like this coyote is a pet look a few photos down and think again.

The coyote is walking here across a field of snow.  I watched him sink into the snow from time to time when his weight broke through the upper crust of the snow field.  The snow here is over a foot deep.  It is slow going for coyotes, deer and elk.

Wow! Can you see the teeth?  This guy must have really been hungry to eat the seed and cracked corn put down for the birds.

These are grosbeaks that have come to eat at our feeders this winter (mostly they like that feed that the coyote is eating).  This is the first year that they have been around our house all winter.  We have only seen them before in the spring and summer.

The male (of course) has a bright red coloration.  On the female it is more yellow/gray.

This photo was taken on 1/28/01 in the morning.  It is beautiful to see Silverheels peeping over the clouds as it frequently does.
